“And to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.”

Reflection

Mem'shelet (Dominion) and Havdil (Separate) project the dominion over Day and Night, which is not merely a concept of authority related to the cycles of time, but also involves the ability to control and balance the forces of revelation (light) and concealment (darkness) in our lives.

This task begins with self-mastery, which is internal and denotes our ability to direct our consciousness toward good. Free will, as our greatest gift, requires moments of clarity but is strengthened by the challenges of darkness. These trials present havdil (separation) as key points for coexisting between the sacred and the profane, between purity and impurity, and between good and evil, choosing that which guides us as a foundation.

Prioritizing our coexistence over our conveniences shows us that separating light from darkness involves a personal distinction between good and evil, wisdom and ignorance, truth and falsehood, as well as between the effects of our actions and our omissions. Through this continuous discernment, we can navigate the duality of existence, guided by His wisdom and purposes.

Or (אוֹר), "light," has a gematric value of 207 (א = 1, ו = 6, ר = 200), a concept that speaks of revelation, of illumination, indicating the clarity that comes from divine understanding and wisdom. That light is a symbol of our knowledge, which dispels the darkness of ignorance and guides us along the right path.

On the other hand, Choshech (חֹשֶ ךְ), "darkness," has a gematric value of 328 (ח = 8, ש = 300, כ = 20), representing mystery, concealment, and unrevealed potential. This perspective should not have a negative connotation, but rather calls us to inhabit the space where light can emerge, presenting us with the opportunity to grow through the challenge and introspection of those dark moments.

Taking control over our own cycles of light and darkness, learning to manage our moods, emotions, and thoughts with wisdom, is one of our great daily tasks. Just as the luminaries rule over day and night, we must also learn to govern our responses to life's circumstances, maintaining a balance between action and reflection.

We must be able to distinguish between what elevates us and what drags us down, between wisdom and ignorance, and between what is true and what is false. This process of discernment is essential for advancing on our spiritual path and fulfilling our divine purpose, with goodness being a lesson learned in the midst of life's duality.

Both light and darkness have a purpose in our existence, and both are necessary for our growth and development. By embracing this duality with wisdom, we can find balance and harmony in our lives. Separating light from darkness is not only a physical phenomenon but also a spiritual process that guides us toward clarity and balance.
